Recommended Posts

Break name:

Artist: Dee Felice Trio

Track name: There Was A Time

Original release: 7"

Label: Bethlehem

Cat number: 45-3095

Year: 1969

Drummer: Dee Felice

Also available on:

Various Artists - James Brown's Funky People Vol. 3

Example:

Hardware - X Amount Of Shots (Bizzy B Remix)

Nookie - Pot Belly

there appears to be 2 versions of this cover by the Dee Felice Trio, one with the familiar drum riff. Only thing is - I can't hear the drums without the bassline in it, maybe everyone re-sampled from the Ultra Magnetic MC's - Give The Drummer Some track??? (talking about hip hop tracks too, like Lord Finesse - Yes, You May and Nice & Smooth - How To Flow)

The break from "There Was A Time" is only attainable if you pan the sample, taking the drums from the right channel and leaving out the bassline from the left channel. This is what I've read from several sources about Paul C. I don't have the record itself, but I've been warned that not every version of the tune is the same. I've been looking for a copy of the 45 for years, but no luck. The song is also on the Dee Felice LP, "In Heat," but this may be a version without the break.

I've actually tried to loop up the break from Give The Drummer Some but I could never get a coherent beat out of it. But I was using the LP version, so it's very possible that there's a cleaner sample on the Bonus Beats version included on the 12" release, which I don't have. The problem with GTDS is that the Funky Drummer is also layered over it, so I don't know if you can get a clean loop of the "There Was A Time" break alone.

Ahhh, thanks Eunomius. I was waiting for your reply

Ahhh, I was wondering about that, and whether this wasn't actually an example of this Paul C working his mastery of sound and magically lifting the drums from the track!!!?

Admittedly I did notice after - in that link you posted - they mentioned the original 7" has the drums & bassline panned from one side to the other - so I guess thats what it is. Still, I did also read in the article the quote from Large Professor stating his amazement how Paul C stripped the drums out of "I Know You Got Soul" (wtf??!!), so... well... who knows... maybe the article got it mixed about this Dee Felice break after all

I noticed they cited the "Do The James" riddem - this they got wrong - its not B.I.G.'s "Dreams" (what? don't they mean Lil' Kim?) that used it later, but Ashanti's "Makeup To Breakup" remix. Which, might I add, is even fatter than the Super Lover Cee original - trust me, I actually checked when the tune came out.

So, for now, Phokus, no clip unless someone passes me a MP3 of the original 7" or you wanna make a clip of the Ultra Magnetic tune?

hmm, I've only got the album version of the Ultramagnetics tune, and if you can't actually get the break out of it, I'm not sure it's worth putting up as the example clip. Will have to find the bonus beats version to see if it was sampled from there.

actually, yeah, you're right... and frankly I think it's more likely to have been sampled from UMCs rather than the original funk track, given the scarcity of the track. Shall we re-write the original post as being a second generation break sampled from UMCs?
