Break name: Lost Entity (New York Side)

Artist: DJ Trace
Track name: Lost Entity (New York Side)
Original release: DJ Trace – Lost Entity
Label: Lucky Spin Recordings
Cat number: TRACE 3
Year: 1993
Drummer: Based on The Winsons' Amen Brother

Also available on: -

Examples:
Tek 9 - A London Sumting
Tom & Jerry - Straight To A Soundboy
Cold Mission - Dreamers
Cold Mission - The Sound Bizniz

Notice that these tunes are all 4Hero. I think they also used it on 'Talk Around Town' from their Parallel Universe album, but I'm not entirely sure.

I was looking for this for over a year or so, I found it by a lucky accident this morning! It was a bit dissapointing that this was just ripped from another jungle tune though. I think it's a great break.

It's more likely that 4 Hero just applied a volume gating effect to their amen break, rather than sampling it directly from Lost Entity. Everyone was using that stuttering effect on breaks circa 93/94. All you had to do was program MIDI controller #7 (channel volume) to alternate between full volume and zero volume (in sync with the beat) on the same MIDI channel that the breakbeat was on.

Well, that does sound like something that could happen, and I'm sure it did, but I am really sure on this one. I suggest you listen to the Cold Mission ones and compare them to Lost Entity. You know, I was looking for this one for a pretty long time, almost given up on it. Then I heard Lost Entity and thought "THAT's the one!" Besides, the break does have a very distinctive sequence and it is clean in Lost Entity.

I see what your getting at but I dont think the Tek 9 tune takes it from Lost Entity. The drop at 0.27 incorporates a number of different edits, including that midi gating 'staccato' effect Stenny described, but in 16ths (not 8ths). The Tom & Jerry/Cold Mission (same concept ;)) quite possibly

I've just had a look at the amen break again... I'd always thought Lost Entity was a straight 'lift' from the source but it isn't... It goes 22-30, skips 25.5-26.5 and swaps 24 & 27! So you are right

In which case you can add Direct To Metal - This Is An Example (mix 3) & Dextrous - Feel to the list (they use the straight sample, not the staccato sample)

But Dextrous I'm not so sure about... as he uses his trademark amen sound in it... So maybe Tek 9 & Dextrous just copied the concept and not the sample. Good spotting nonetheless, you'll find there's been a few rips taken from jungle tunes, some that have been posted, some that have yet not.

Looks like you did some serious research here Ornette! Thanks for confirming! I am completely sure about the Tom & Jerry and Cold Mission ones. The Tom & Jerry tune uses this as well as the 'normal' amen, So the Lost Entity Kick and the 1st snare from the 2nd bar of the regular amen. About Tek 9, that kick sounds realy punchy in your face, so I think he might have used Lost Entity AND applied a gate effect. Also the sequence is very distinctive. But you are right about the 16ths gate effect. You can clearly hear the sort of 'gap' between the kick and snare.

Well, let me know what you think.

Ok, just to confirm, its Direct To Metal - This Is An Example mix 1 that uses this, and does use the staccato sample not the straight one, also the Dextrous track doesn't have the cymbal splash in it which means it isn't a usage of this ;)

But, another usage I have spotted:
