Right..

Must be from a test pressing or something then because it sounds really good.

nah its not... there was a guy on ebay spitting them out like nobody's business.

after some interrogation he admitted that he had em pressed up himself from the mp3 thats been online for a few years.

no doubt it sounds 'ok' but definitely has nothing to do with NTV or any of them lot.

Right, I just got the copy of said record delivered, I bought it on Ebay and prior to buying emailed the seller asking about it being legit or not. S/he wrote it is 100% original and not a bootleg. It also says so in the listing. Now anyone would probably assure potential buyers it's an original test pressing and I didn't really think it would be but I got it and apart from the NTV003 etching it also has the 'Simon -> The Exchange' tag which I compared to the ones I got on released records and it is in fact identical. The records sounds surprisingly good as well, really great mastering, very clear in the high end area.

I got hold of (P2P...) the leaked tune's 320 to cross reference the sound. It's a common knowledge that the leaked track was originally 192 kbps and only later got ripped to 320 from the lower quality mp3.

I listened to both the record and the 320kbps (err, should I say 192kbps) mp3 and compared them on my studio monitors (flat sounding nearfield yamaha ns10 replicas) and on my sennheiser hd 25 mk II headphones (couple of times, at the same loudness level). Outcome: the vinyl sounds a lot better and you can tell it's not only the bass areas but predominantly the high end, it's much clearer and you don't get any sound artifacts like you do in case of the mp3 that was leaked.

Additionally :stalker mode on: I checked the paypal invoice and the person who sold it to me lives in Edinburgh, Scotland at the moment...

Still not sure what to make of it all, I did not believe the record would be original from the get go but the etchings, the fat sound of it and err... Scotland seem like pieces of a puzzle.

Anyways, emailed the seller again to possibly give me some insight on how they got hold of the copies of NTV003...

it costs circa 500 gbp to have simon davey master a tune and cut it onto a laqcuer disc and have him etch ANY cat-nr into it...

also the difference in sound quality: simon is easily capable of removing those artifacts and alter the overall sound characteristics SIGNIFICANTLY.

and everybody could order him to do so, it's simply his job.

you could tell him it's a tune by [insert any name] - i highly doubt that simon is into the dnb scene himself deep enough to know fucking hostile.

the catalog number is no proof at all for anything, and the etching only proves for simon having done the mastering.

nothing else.

scotland is a country with more than 1 inhabitant, so - i smell wishful thinking.

don't get me wrong, izm, i'd wish for the same like you do...

but there is just too little evidence to make it more than wild speculation.

ok i just received a copy of this pressing which i bought on ebay from a guy named j mackay located in london.

so we got 3 different sellers, one of them having admitted that he did order the mastering and pressing.

after a thorough examination and listening comparison to a 10" vinyl of this tune i had bought on ebay in 2004

(1-time vinyl cutting by audiowerker.de, definitely not legtitimate, MOST probably cut off the leaked 192/320 mp3)

and to the leaked mp3 itself, i concluded the same i already have speculated about in this thread:

no proof at all for anything, and the etching only proves for simon having done the mastering.

nothing else.

in short: the mystery remains.

one could now visit all 3 known sellers and get all information out of them, try to track down the year of the mastering and search the customer files of the exchange house for the guy who ordered the mastering, and maybe even find the pressing plant it has been pressed in (via the shipping address of the lacquer disc) and shops it has been sold in etc... lol

 Was just about to bump this, received mine from J Mackey this week. Superb pressing, sounds great, very pleased with it.

Bit dodgy buying a bootleg - I know it's not really condoned but I justify it because it never got a release, it's been about five years and because I love Kemal's stuff! Cost me a tenner including postage - saw someone buy one off Ebay for ?70 a few months back
