I haven't seen any, but i would say it might be an idea to grab some inner sleeves like the mobile fidelity original master sleeves to prevent them getting further marked up. Those music house sleeves are definitely a big part of the reason why all these dubs are so battered..nasty little things haha

i must be the only one who thinks they're really iconic B-)

most damage ive seen comes from cherry bombs & needle scrapes - a sleeve wont help that, the few i cut myself at music house are in great condition as i looked after them :D

Ornette - i have one of those in light blue, its a normal card sleeve. Its some replacement orange ones im after really.

It would look nice to have all new pristine music house sleeves but my dubs are mostly in shit condition visually and some of them i consider to be important so i've got them all in mobile fidelidy sleeves to preserve them as best possible. If anyone does find a batch somehow i would definitely grab some and use them as an outer sleeve though ;)

I've got a few battered MH sleeves i would happily donate haha

I'm with Re-Touch on this one - those sleeves aren't the best things to have them in, especially with acetate being so soft, you can scratch it with your fingernail even. At least one of the ones I got has a nasty scuff on it from where its been shoved in a box and another dub has caught the edge of the sleeve centre & ripped it. Luckily that was on the unimportant side but could have easily been worse. Others the seams have split and the dub has been hanging loose in the mailer when it arrived. In fact I was quite surprised when getting my first dubs recently and they were all in sleeves like that - I would have imagined they'd come in something much sturdier like 'discobags', like another I got which did that's got 'NU-MATIC - HARD TIMES' written along the top in black marker

To be fair those yellow sleeves probably are quite iconic and thinking about it those sleeves are likely american in origin in first place, considering Music House is from the old school of cutting studios and no doubt modelled themselves on jamaican cutting studios that would have sourced all their consumables from the US. Just take a look at the lathe pictured in the recent Metalheads / Blue Note article, its like some sort of relic!

(Just looking up some pictures now, it seems they do have newer machines; that must have just been an exhibition piece)

I could see how if you had a fair few you might want to replace the sleeves although its worth bearing in mind the old ones may have writing & markings on them which could serve as an important historical record in its own right, I'd be more in favour of keeping the existing sleeve and placing within something else. Also its worth thinking about how you might best preserve these things for the future, as acetate continually decomposes over time. Here's a link I did come across before that discusses some of this: http://cool.conservation-us.org/byform/mailing-lists/arsclist/2005/08/msg00014.html

NB. >>sealed, poly-lined sleeves are NOT a good idea

Does anyone have any technical information on what needle they use for cutting the plate? I want to find out so I can work out a home stylus that will match as closely as possible.

Just trying to figure out at what point they started using the new sleeves...

Here's a pic of the recent Razorback dub that appeared on ebay (click on all images for larger):

(Did you know you could change the resolution of the image given by ebay?! 60_10 seems to be the highest)

That's from 1998. I have dubs here from 1997 that are still in the yellow sleeve so I guess it was some point between 97 & 98 that they started using them.

Also the labels, its interesting what different ones they used. There's ones with large logo over the whole area which seem to be older (1993?) then, those with the smaller logo as above. Also colours, which ones did they use? I've seen a few different ones/types.

Here's one I've never seen before!

Not sure what sleeves they are using now. Here's a picture from 2011: (I hope Ricky Force & the guys wont mind!)

They seem to be white card with something printed on them, possibly something stamped themselves, I dont know.

But back to the stylus. Its important to get one that will track the groove as well as it can, especially if its a dubplate that is worn. I think its known that an elliptical stylus will always give better playback than a spherical, due to the elongated shape holding better.

This is also important because I am trying to find out about wet playing. Here's an interesting link that gives an actual overview of surface noise:

http://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=41978&start=66

The upshot is that the friction causes the stylus to knock about causing the pops & clicks. This is why we would want better tracking, firstly with an elliptical stylus, and then with wet playing helping to reduce that friction. Its also very important to use a new, unworn stylus!

Wet playing may also be an issue, because water itself speeds up the decomposition of the acetate (nb. nitrocellulose), most of the info I have read is in regards to vinyl which is inert, certainly one would want to use distilled water.

The spherical type however are typical in dj setups as they perform better practically.
