Hmmmmm...... is it Little Feat - Fool Yourself ?

But the version every one uses must be a second gen because it sounds very different! Sounds like its been sampled Akai 8-Bit, maybe tape sat and reverb?

I just had a fiddle with the Tribe called quest - Bonita Applebum version. I'm not convinced, if it's a second gen, it has been jigged with as well as sonically altered.

I had a listen and didn't think it sounded right.

Here is the cleanest and longest i can find of this intriguing break. Interestingly it's never a whole bar no matter who has used it. That suggests to me it is either not a whole loop/has some other instruments in the the rest, or everyone sampled it from the one place or off each other.

I sampled it clean from the Euphoria (Ninos dream) and have had closer inspection. Could it be a programmed Funk Inc - Kool is Back with low bandwidth? It is more recognisable when you pitch it down.

I think you might be on the right way.

Here's the sample from Euphoria (pitched down) for all the others out here.

Notice the sound of the snare when the hihats stop? Sound like it was sampled to an 8-bit sampler. Also notice the tambourine like tail at the end of the snare. It was cut out but not clean. The Bassdrum and hihats/ghost hits in the background sound really familiar ("Kool is Back" was my first thought too!) but the SNARE is, what makes it puzzling.

My take: It's a second gen break from a hiphop record. Some "standard" break sampled into a 8-bit sampler + compressed snare hit.

What ghost notes do you mean? The Euphoria break is just 3 sounds, Bass drum HiHat Snare, Boom Tss Kaaa. The only ghost note is hear are from a slow release on the amp envelope, not present in the original. I really can't hear Kool is back in this break, can someone isolate the part/s they think it is?

I do agree it's most likely a 2nd gen hiphop sample.

Ok so i found the full length break on Megabass remix vol 1 sample cd:

When listening at original tempo can anyone hear the break that was used for Massive attack - blue lines underneath? (I forget what is was called, I think it was Tom Scott - sneakin), i can hear the shaker, wooden sounding kick drum and the open hat at the end - only the rim shot snare drum is buried under another snare.

Is this the same break, but the full bar?

No that's Stanley Turrentine - Sister Sanctified. Also used by DJ Mayhem - Cold Acid

Want to post that as a separate thread in the main breaks forum? I don't think we have it in there...

the source has been found
0:04

so it contains Little Feat - Fool Yourself and Tom Scott - Sneakin' In The Back breaks, snare from Fancy - Feel Good break and other drum hits.

however, Jungle Pirate - Mutiny On The Bounty and Dica & Vinyl Groove - Rush On You use a combination of this break and Sister Sanctified, sampled from somewhere.
