Please help me identify DnB labels

Hello RDB/knowledgegodsofjungleslashdrum'nbass

I'm currently working on my master thesis which is (more or less) about Drum 'n Bass. Thijs is helping me out with the data but there's an important thing missing from the database: it doesn't say if a label is a drum 'n bass label or not.

Before I post a list with the labels that I'd like to see "identified" I have the following question that needs to be answered so we can start identifying once we know what to look for :

What do YOU think makes a label a Drum 'n Bass-label?

DnB only? at least 51% DnB? 1 DnB remix of a track?

Examples: Sony and Talkin Loud

An MA on RDB...that's interesting  What's your degree in? What's the goal of the thesis?

I guess my answer to your question would depend on what you're trying to do with the thesis. For example, it might make sense to start with labels that only do 100% dnb and, if that doesn't give you the sample you need (or whatever), you could expand your criteria from there

There's so much crossover stuff... take Production House, which has a single line of cat. numbers, but split over 3 'labels'. Or Bingo, which can't really make up it's mind...

A DnB/Jungle label for me is a label that has at least 1 DnB tune on each release. Which would officially mean that Bingo wouldn't be a DnB label.

I definitely don't see Sony/BMG, Talkin Loud, Against The Grain, etc as DnB labels.

The fact that you're putting a label on a label means it's a specialisation. And an allround label can never be specialised!

Hope this helps...

Thanks for your advise, my thesis (for Human Geography) should reveal the role of place/space in Drum 'n Bass. Globalisation literature quite often indicate that place doesn't matter anymore (or matters less). So I'm using Drum 'n Bass as a case study I guess.

Once I know which labels are dnb-labels I can see how the dnb labels have "spread across the world" (or not). I'll try to explain why it happened that way. Not entirely sure though on the specifics.

I started out with about 4500 labels. After filtering out the labels with less than five releases (about 30% of the labels has had only 1 release!) about 1500 remain. So these 1500 need to be labeled (no pun) as being dnb or non-dnb.

A criterium of 100% dnb will rule out any label that has released a single non-dnb track/release. I'm not sure that's what I'm after and it would make identifying a though job since you'd have to know for each label exactly if any release/track is dnb or not. I think using 51% or more as a decent indicator, you'd be able to take a quick look at that labels releases and see if it's majority of releases are dnb or not. That's unless there's more than a few labels that would fit in that criterium but have a lot of other releases. What do you think? Is it actually relevant?

edit: how many of Bingo's releases are dnb? I already labeled it dnb but I didn't know it had any non-dnb... it's good I'm asking you it seems.

The thing with Sony & Talkin Loud is that neither were set up release dnb.

Talkin Loud has always released a large amount of different music with dnb only being a small percetage of what they've put out. They chose to sign/licence the largest dnb acts when they were at their peak from release material on other labels. I'm not sure if there's anyone on their back catalogue who had their first release for that label

The Talkin Loud discog looks fairly extensive but you have to remember the listings we have for Sony must account for less than 1% of that label's total output. Sony's a huge major label releasing every genre under the sun.

To me a dnb label isn't one whose output is 100% music of that genre but whose artist roster put out dnb tunes as the bulk of their body of work. 51% I would have thought is quite a low amount of releases to consider a label to be known for mainly releasing dnb. If nearly half their output isn't dnb, especially if that's releases that are totally non-dnb then I think you would not associate that label with that one genre alone.

Does that all make sense?

Also, what counts as dnb? I'd say Ram is one of the biggest dnb labels out there but their early releases are not dnb in its strictest sense

tricksy question you ask me

I guess you're mostly pointing at "the beginning" where it's hard to draw a line between jungle/dnb and the hardcore rave stuff. I was hoping making a distinction between these labels wouldn't be too hard.

Interview with Sarah 'Groove Connection' Sandy in All Crews by Belle-Fortune:

"People say I'm biased but the first DJ I heard playing Breakbeat was Fabio and it was early Reinforced and Kick Down Records, experimenting with breaks. [...]"

I'd definately count Ram as dnb. It's a bit the same with Reinforced as a DnB label don't you think?

Do you guys think you'd be able to consistently decide wether a label is a dnb label or is it hopeless?

I don't need exact figures like the 51%, I actually don't think it would be necessary. I just want all the dubstep and gabba labels gone from the list.

Wouldn't the release of dnb on major labels like Sony tell you something just as interesting about the migration and popularity of the music?

yes, somewhat but not in a very physical way. It will tell you it's gone "big" and somewhat global. So I'll probably mention it but the spatial diffusion of the "real" dnb labels will hopefully tell me more than just "it went global".

*fingers crossed*

Ok so will you help me giving it a try with the labels that start with a number (or dot ) to see if this will work or not?

I've covered about 25% of the 1500 labels that I would like to see identified as being a dnb-label or not. Please let me know if I've already messed up any yes or no so far.

Any other suggestions/questions/remarks/etc are welcome of course.

2000 Black - this is a techno label, isn't it?

24 Karat

3rd Eye

Tough call on these. They're labels from the mid-90s so could be called dnb on one level but they didn't release anything that would I would associate with current dnb tunes. Very different styles in both instances that go back to the question above about what you'd consider dnb to be.

3rd Party

786 Approved

21 Records

21st Century

380 Records

4 The Floor (guessing a little on this one)

80 Aum Records (don't knwo it but looks like hardcore to me)

I would categorise these as hardcore labels, not dnb

4th & Broadway - no, this is a major label that releases all sorts of tunes in many genres

3 Stripe - I don't know these releases but know the artists on there and would be very surprised if this was even early hardcore (releases are from late 80s/early 90s) so definitely not dnb

3.5 Records - dubstep?

679 Recordings - dunno, not dnb though

777 - possibly breaks and not dnb. Don't know though

Ones that definitely are dnb:-

1210 Recordings

24 Seven Recordings

31 Records

3D Mode Recordings

3rd Angle Productions

5HQ Recordings

720 Degrees

ah ok let's see what we can do with the "tough calls".

Personally I have no idea what their releases sound like but that doesn't really matter (although I'm listening to your jump up mix which has one 24 Karat tune to see what we're talking about).

We'll have to work something out so we can file these "though calls" under a certain genre but first I need some clarifications.

I got into dnb somewhere in '97 I think so I don't know much about the preceding stuff. I've read All Crews so that's what I've got to work with. First of all there's the confusion about the term "hardcore". It's the house music of the rave days, out of which jungle/dnb evolved, right? It's got nothing (or not much) to do with the stuff we call hardcore over here in the Netherlands (which I've listed as "gabba").

I'm guessing the major trouble we face is making a distinction between that hardcore and early jungle/dnb.

Please correct me if & where I'm wrong.

How about: anything released before the '90s doesn't fit in, anything without breakbeats doesn't fit in, do we need to set a certain bpm? or a jungle/dnb feel?

something else: I use jungle and dnb as one and the same thing, I know you could make a distinction (or not) but I'd like to include as much as possible.

Gosh this is hard hehe, I'll wait to see what you guys got to say, I'm getting lost in this jungle (sry for that).

edit: Well that 24karat tune was dnb to me, as is this System X tune on 3rd Eye. Imho of course.

edit2: discogs has both of those listed as dnb btw, just sayin'...

edit3: Listening to one of your hardcore mixes haste, and I see it's even more complicated.

I think you could say that jungle & dnb are the same. The 24 karat & 3rd Eye releases could be called dnb with no real problems. It was more whether you personally wanted to draw a distinction between the two which it seems you don't, so that's all cool.

Hardcore is more difficult cos I wouldn't really say it's the same as dnb, but that is just my personal opinion so it doesn't mean you should listen to me! You're right, I'm referring to hardcore in terms of what evolved from acid house not the gabba side of things. As I'm assuming you've heard from the hardcore mix those tunes are pretty different to what we call dnb now.

Before the 90s is definitely a good cut off point, I don't think you can sensibly group tunes made over 18 years ago in the same genre. In terms of jungle/dnb sound I don't think you had that much that really started to sound like today's music until around 1993. Tunes before that were definitely of a different flavour. Anyone agree/disagree? I don't think bpm comes into it as there were always tunes at the same bpm that sounded vastly different

Dunno if any of this is helping!

80 Aum Records - Belgian label, not DnB.

According to one popular belief, as voiced by some big name artists/DJ's, 'DnB' is basically a media name for jungle, since at first the media said jungle was wack, but when it went big they didn't want to say they were wrong, so they just put another label on it.

Though others say the ragga-inspired stuff is jungle, the darker stuff is DnB.

And to make it all worse: over here in Holland 'UK hardcore' was called 'breakbeat'.

And there's an overlap between UK happy hardcore and NL happy hardcore. Gabber is different from that and should be left out, otherwise you'd also need to include 80Aum, Stealth Records and acts like Praga Khan/Jade 4 U, etc. It was all around the same time, but specific to Holland/Belgium. It was probably also played in the UK, but don't make it more difficult than it needs to be...

Another point is that jungle/DnB itself changed a LOT over time. From hardcore and happy it went to jungle. Then the artists decided it became too overground and it went dark. And around 2000 it lightened up again. People like you that entered the scene at a later date usually don't know about the roots and aren't interested in them. People like Haste stopped around 97 (right?) and don't like the newer stuff. I started around 1991 up to now (though a lot less active the past year), though for some reason I'm not interested in the styles that are doing well in Holland. You can really hear it's done by people that came from gabber. I just don't like it.

At the start, cruising speed was around 125 BPM. Around 1992 it already went to around 140. 1995 around 165 and now I think around 170. But even around 1992 there were tunes at 170BPM (Assult N Battery, Deejay Recordings #2 comes to mind).

By the way: 'hardcore' is a weak name... about every music style (apart from classical I guess...) has a sub genre 'hardcore'. But that's irrelevant to the discussion.

If the idea is to show the 'spread' of DnB you can probably cut it off in 1995. There were hardly any non UK acts back then. And the fan base at least in Holland was very small! I know Dreazz made a 'magazine' called "Wicked Hardcore". My mate and I contributed to it (this was before he started Triple). Could ask my mate if he still has those lying around... I think there were only 3 or 4 issues done. But that was around the point it started getting bigger in Holland. With the first all-Jungle rave in Bubbles (Lelystad) where I even played! I guess this was in 1993 (as I think I played MA1 and later for the radio played SHADOW30R2).

(hmm... think I didn't help in clearing things up here )

well I wouldn't say "not helping", I wasn't exactly hoping someone would have the perfect answer.

I'm very much interested in those magazines by the way, if I have some time left I'll try to come over if you're ok with that.

Anyway, I think we have a decent cohorent look on what we can count as jungle/dnb and what not. We'll keep discussing the "grey areas".

About Basswerk (English)

Basswerk is a Drum & BassLabel & Club Project based on the Junglegrowers-Project founded in 1994 by Green Man and Cheetah. Ever since then, Basswerk became one of the leading German Drum & Bass Labels. and was voted Label of the Year several times by the biggest german D&B Community Future-Music.net.

Our Sub-Label Basswerk Files is another Platform for selected good drum & bass and electronic music that isn't on vinyl so far - or won't be ever - such as different versions.

So Basswerk Records would be a dnb label while Basswerk Files isn't, anyway Basswerk Files is DD only which I'm not using at all. Basswerk Limited only has one release, no idea what it is though.

edit: forgot to delete the "bootleg" label, same goes for "white".
