Sound clips - please read

Recommended Posts

Please do NOT post full-length versions of unreleased songs on this forum; short clips are sufficient.

In the same vein, please don't discuss the distribution of full-length mp3s, either.

We'd like to offer as many sound clips as possible for this section of the site. I've spoken to a few people about this area, a few of whom have had concerns about this section getting filled up with incorrectly IDed tunes that actually did come out and aren't unreleased at all. It has been suggested that we have to have a sound clip to verify the unreleased version of the tune before it gets posted and, while I see the benefit of this, I don't think that it is totally necessary providing there are others on the forum who can verify the track's existence.

However, it would be great to get as many clips of tunes as possible and if they are readily available then it may well go down the route that a clip is needed for the track to appear on the site (I don't think there have been too many instances of incorrect IDs up here yet but it may become a problem at a later date).

Please send MP3s through to us at my gmail address (10MB limit) - rolldabeats@gmail.com. I will then put all the clips up on our server for easy access.

wouldn't it be reasonable to give guidelines about the format and quality of the clips?

i don't mean it that strict, coz obviously, one probably won't be able to produce a high quality clip of a tune found on a ten years old tape, and then it won't have much sense to encode it on higher bitrate than something like 128kbps... but on the other hand, what if we have acces to the best source (like the artist himself posts something in), should it then be 320kbps? for example what qulaity do you think should a clip have that comes from a dab recorded 192kbps radio show?

and although practically everything can be converted to everything else, i guess you don't want to fuss around with that. mp3 is the most wide spread (but again, it can be cbr and vbr too, latter one can confuse some older players), but others - ogg, realaudio, wma, whatever - have their own advantages, and can be prefered in some situations...

what if someone can host the clip he wants to post? will you collect those, to put them on the "central" server? or should everyone use the gmail address?

Good point!

I think it's best that MP3s are used. It's likely that this will be the standard format for sound clips on the site so it makes sense to stick with them for the time being. Having said that we'll gladly accept whatever you can provide us with as we will be able to convert at our end.

The quality is unimportant really. For the moment just send what you can within the limits (can't recieve anything over 10MB on gmail). I don't see there being a need for anything over 192kbps as these will all end up as low bitrate clips on the new site when they are put to full use.

The clips that we receive will eventually be centrally hosted. I'm not sure what's going on about that at the moment, I'd like to start putting clips up there but I don't have access to the new content storage yet. You are more than welcome to host your own clips, that's not a problem at all. This is just for people who have no way to host things. Eventually these clips will be used on the new site in the unreleased tunes section to provide a clip of every tune that is listed so, at some point, we will need to collect them all up to put on the central sever

Hopefully in the future there will be a better system for uploading clips (perhaps via FTP to a private area on the server). I'll edit the top post to include my AIM & MSN details for file transfers if some people will find this easier

If this happens can the post be deleted by the moderators?

I think the problem is that with a lot of tunes there's not many people that can verify them as unreleased. Even if you provide a soundclip you can't be 100% certain a tune is unreleased unless it's confirmed by a producer/DJ.

Unless there's a very strict criteria for posting I think there will always be some incorrect posts, but in my opinion this section of the forum will work better if it allows for the occasional mistake as it will mean more tunes getting posted.

Right, and the benefit of posting soundclips is that we can have people saying "No, that's not unreleased, it's actually xxx01" so in some ways mistakes can help us.

JJ, mods can edit/delete posts (which I've already had to do in this forum a few times for 'unreleased' tunes) so that's no prob
