MyRDB in beta

Recommended Posts

Please don't think much of this yet, but I needed a little start to get myself started ;)

People are encouraged to use it for now, but: at the moment it is still BETA. Features will be added in the future, but everything can change. Meaning even the releases you added can be gone. Once things are stable and will stay as they are a new post will be made.

:excl: For now remember that your input could eventually be lost.

Potential ideas:

  • Stats section where 'most wanted' graphs etc can be drawn
  • My Favorites (Labels, Artists, Tracks, etc)
  • 'Add to MyRDB' from search query for quick adds
  • Ability to add parts of EP's and LP's that arent quite complete
  • See what releases are the most wanted ... likewise with 'owns' -- which tune does everyone have
  • "View Collection" Which could take you to photographs you may have uploaded of your collection or certain prized items.
  • "Public" - View other people's profiles (if made public) and view overall "Graphs & Stats" eg "Most Wanted," "Total # of Owned Releases" etc.
  • Sub-menu allowing grade of vinyl, promo vs. full release, plain vs. pic sleeve, etc.
  • A ratings system for the tunes
  • "X users have this / X users want this"
  • Making your collection private, giving permissions to certain people to browse
  • "Batch Add" option -- checkboxes next to all search results and a "Select All" checkbox at the top
  • "Previously owned" function, showing what a user previously had
  • "My Trades" -- a user flags items from My Collection to be added to My Trades. A user's My Trades could be compared to other users' My Trades / My Wants lists to find potential matches.
  • Import function
  • "Construct a Tracklist" - select tunes from RDB and enter optional timestamps to create a tracklisting for a mix
  • Excel sheet export (onlamp.com)

I'll add in 100 of mine to start with to help test it :)

[Edit]

That's about 100 I reckon. Hope that helps you test it. Look forward to seeing some features B-)

Before you guys go and add your entire collection, just remember this is a BETA -- we might need to erase all the data to implement this feature fully.

Right now we just need people to add a few things here and there to build up multiple collections in the DB for betatesting.

Wicked! How do i view 'my collection' as it were?

Also, are there any plans for a stats section where 'most wanted' graohs etc can be drawn?

I was gonna type the same thing about the want's list i.e will it be an extention of the profile or something but you got in first - ha ha

You can't view your collection right now. It's a VERY cut down version for the moment. We are using it to test how the system works and then build it up from there.

We will be setting up the MyRDB page at some point in the near future. Gotta think about how it's gonna be laid out and stuff, though, and what should be included on it.

Any suggestions of what you'd like to see would be lovely

  • Having the option to display someone's MyRDB in groups (i.e. Artist or Label) as opposed to just a straight list of everything
  • A 'Want to Buy/Trade' list
  • Favorites (Labels, Artists, Tracks, etc)
  • 'Add to MyRDB' from search query for quick adds

How about a bits-and-pieces type section where you can post parts of EP's and LP's that arent quite complete? I've noticed that there are quite a few of those in my collection...

I had a little think about what would be cool and thought the best way to get it down was to hypothesize about how I envisage the site. I don?t know if any of this is workable or appropriate?

What I?d like to see is a link on the front page to ?MyRDB?. This would take you to a page listing the releases in your collection by label order, sortable by artist, year etc. Along a tool bar at the top you would have the options to:

?View Collection? ? Which could take you to photographs you may have uploaded of your collection or certain prized items.

?Wants? ? As the collection page, but the records you want. This could be linked to some kind of trading scheme? Don?t know if you want to get into that, but people could flag releases as ones they would offer for trade/sale? (seems a bit long though, I wouldn?t use it!)

?Graphs and Stats?(!) ? God knows if you could do this, but how cool would it be to view a bar graph of releases by year in your collection?! I know of news sites which do this with articles...

?Public? ? View other people?s profiles (if made public) and view overall ?Graphs & Stats? eg ?Most Wanted?, ?Total # of Owned Releases? etc.

cool. been waiting for this feature for a while. I'll enter in the info on a couple of the labels to help with beta testing. As for added features:

a link to being able to view "my collection", which can further be sorted by label/artist etc (as opposed to one big list) is, I think crucial.

Nobody has mentioned this yet, but it would be uber awesome if there was the following kind of feature to help make the "in my collection" feature more detailed. Suppose you look up a release.... you realize you have it in your collection.... so then you click on "ADD TO MY COLLECTION" and then a sub-menu pops up, where you choose the form in which you have the record:

a. Promo copy only

b. full release, plain sleeve

c. full release, picture sleeve

as well as the condition of your particular record:

a. mint

b. near mint

c. vg+

d. vg

etc...

besides that a "wants" list would be great. It would be amazing if you could, when looking up a particular release, see if other people on rolldabeats have it. If this could somehow be whittled down further so that the list shows who, out of the people that have the release, also have the release for sale/trade (i.e. they have doubles), that would be amazing (and would cut down on people making offers to other people on records they don't want to part with). discogs has some features like this that work well

as for nifty graphs or info: if the data on how many people have a release could somehow be crossreferenced to how many people want the release, this might give a loose indication of demand/rarity (at least amongs rolldabeats members)

it might be even cooler if there could be ratings given for each record on two scores: one is (when ascertainable) an objective rarity score, which would be figured out by something like how many known copies of a record were pressed with how old it is/how often it pops up on ebay. The other score would be a collector's rarity score, which would reflect how in demand a record is amongst collectors relative to how often it seems to show up for sale. Of course, the variables and missing data for something like this are extremely daunting, but even a loose indication of something like this would be interesting.

Another idea for the pot ... now we have a long collection list, I'd see the ability to search it in exactly the same way as you do the whole RDB database as an essential feature. Maybe just have a checkbox beneath the main Search box that allow you to narrow your search to just your collection. ????

Oh yes

Loads of really good ideas here, I've had a few more to add to the list but I don't see why we can't incorporate a lot of them into the MyRDB area.

I had a quick go at knocking up a page today and it should look pretty cool, I reckon :D

this is interesting. another idea is possibly a ratings system for the tunes.

Who would like to know what tunes are rated as being the best ever, and which ones the WORST ever???

Straight up information on how many times a particular record is in possession by the members of RDB would be fascinating in itself, by the way!

P.S. Get ready for an avalanche of new members!!!!

Considering this, I think it would be fairer to say that MyRDB is in ALPHA

we have had discussions about this in the past. still not quite sure what to do with it, since it will no doubt be feeding a lot of (useless) discussions as well. it's not off the list though.

absolutely, i have thought about that naming, but i think more people are familiar with the beta naming :)

In more detail...

I think that a lot of this stuff should be pretty easy. The "most wanted" type stuff is a very simple database query of people's wantslists. The lists will be sortable by every column and I had already thought that it would be cool to incorporate a serach into the MyRDB page for wnats & collection. I think it will be fine to search other people's collections as well. Do you think it would be worth having an option to make your collection private if you wanted to?

I dont' know if we'd allow the upload of personal pictures of your records/collection. I'm not really sure if that would be good use of the server space that we have. The graph ideas are interesting. I'm not toltally sure on how possible they are but I know it can be done. It's something that we might introduce over time but I doubt will be a feature early on.

You are able to add more than one copy of a release into your collection so it will be easy to show when you have doubles. I doubt we'd have a trading scheme here. If people want to trade they can use the site as a means to do that but it would be on an unofficial basis. We've discussed introducing areas of the forum to trading/sales before but agreed that it would just get spammed all the time. I don't think we should actually get involved in the actual trading sitde of things as we wouldn't want to be held, or thought, responsible for someone getting ripped off!

I don't see why it would be a big deal to introduce a grading for your vinyl, it should only be one extra field in the database. Thijs? Equally, it would be possible to include the promo/sleeve options but, again, I think this might be the sort of thing that is added further down the line. I had had discussions with xo before about how we could introduce multiple release formats (promo/coloured vinyl/normal release copy/repress) for records with the same number so that all could be accessed from the same cat no listing (with different scans & info for each one) and that's something that I think would be great to impement at some point, this might go some way to providing a solution for that idea.

The one main thing that i think hasn't been mentioned is the ability to download your collection as an Excel file, this needs to be in place, I think.

we have had discussions about this in the past. still not quite sure what to do with it, since it will no doubt be feeding a lot of (useless) discussions as well. it's not off the list though.

Like Thijs says, this has been discussed before and I think after much consideration we agreed that we would not introduce ratings for tracks. We wanted to keep the site "opinion free" and just list facts.

I'm not sure if it'll stay this way and can see that, as the My Collection feature takes off, there might be more demand for this type of thing

it might be even cooler if there could be ratings given for each record on two scores: one is (when ascertainable) an objective rarity score, which would be figured out by something like how many known copies of a record were pressed with how old it is/how often it pops up on ebay. The other score would be a collector's rarity score, which would reflect how in demand a record is amongst collectors relative to how often it seems to show up for sale. Of course, the variables and missing data for something like this are extremely daunting, but even a loose indication of something like this would be interesting.

These are great ideas but, unfortunately, I can't see a lot of them workiing. I don't think we have a field for how many copies of a record exists (or maybe we do hidden somewhere) but the amount of releases we have compared to the number that we know the numbers that were pressed is vastly different. Any kind of sums based on these figures will only be available for a minority of releases in the database. It would be impossible to include any ebay data in the system unless someone sits there an catalogues everything that is listed on there. I know me & Thijs certainly don't have time for this and I doubt anyone else will, either. There's way too much human input needed for that one to work.

talk about opening a can of worms on this feature as the possibilities could be endless. another idea is how would you go about doing the wants list. would it be an add box like the add box for my collection but next to it - either different colour or something?. also there will be and edit function I take it for tunes you swap or don't have any more because you sold/traded em or if you manage to get some of them of the list. and I cant wait to see how it will work even though I feel sorry for you as I bet you have a bundle of work ahead on this feature now- eh?
