stenny
Now here's *another* amen break I've heard used in loads of old hardcore tunes from around about 1993. It's just the straight 1 bar amen but with a high pitched 'beep' noise at the end. Listen to the intro of this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHxWqloPnZw Has this one been sourced anywhere yet? I had a quick search on here but could only find the other second generation amens like the NWA, Mantronix and 3rd Bass ones.
humana
Was the first usage of this the D.O.P.E track? I always thought it was original to that? I do know that the 'beep' sound is a sax squeak which is the same one that can be heard at the start of Raw by Big Daddy Kane, which is originally sampled from Escape-ism by James Brown. Maybe look for other hip hop tunes that also sample Escape-ism.

I just chopped it out of RAW, pitched it up a bit and mixed it in with the amen break and it sounds spot on. What is the D.O.P.E track you mentioned? Is it 'When I was Young'? Phokus
Yeh. Don't remember if the Amen is clean on it, though?

stenny
So, after having listened carefully to that mix of When I Was Young, it looks like it must be the original source then. That sax sound can be heard by itself at one point in the tune, as well as mixed in with the amen. Plus you can hear the reverb of the sax sound decaying over the amen break after the first bar in the intro. Cris B - Dark Side Of The Jungle (Remix) [soapbar] is another one guilty of sampling it. Ornette
I'm thinking whether this one is worthy enough to be posted as a second gen breakbeat. It's a very simple variant but considering it has been reappropriated in whole a number of times... i've spotted three tunes lately that are using this. Do you think you might post this one up Stenny?
