and now i want to know...

is rufige kru just a alias for all of goldie's collabs? i have see tracks and websites crediting rob playford, danny j, 4 hero and dego for being part of rufige kru...

can anyone shed some light on this?

dego & rob playford are mentioned alongside rufige kru because they engineered tunes for goldie & freebase. goldie didn't engineer any of the early reinforced stuff, they were all done by the 4 hero boys which is why they sound similar to a lot of 4 hero stuff from the time. round about when goldie made angel rob playford started engineering goldie's stuff, you can tell who engineered what as the styles are different. the timeless lp was done by playford

Rufige Cru to me is Goldie + whoever happens to be engineering his stuff at the time. The engineering on the Terminator EP is credited to DJ Freebase and Markus "Co-pilot to the stars" Rutherford for "Rufige Cru Productions"

Any ideas how we're going to deal with this in the database?

The database currently says Rob Playford and Goldie (in that order!), which clearly isn't the case for a lot of the entries. Especially as we seem to have the unreleased Rufige Cru LP in the database as well, which is presumably Goldie & Tech Itch.

DJ Freedom?!

That's wrong. Rufige Kru is basically Goldie. In the early days he wrote tunes with Freebase but they parted company over 10 years ago. It's just one of the names he uses when he's making tracks. Nowadays it will just be him and an engineer, Rob Playford should not be listed under this alias he should just be the engineer on several of the tracks, just as Dego will be the engineer on lots of the early ones

Yeah, the introduction of the "Engineered by" field would certainly smooth out this issue.

It was Freebase who worked on Terminator, according to the record sleeve itself.

Incidentally, Freebase has recently been hosting the upstairs room at Herbal on Metalheadz club nights.

What we really need is the introduction of timelines in artist histories ;)

Freebase really needs to be listed as co-writing Terminator (not engineering it) but he should not be present on the newer releases

Sorry Thijs :P

It's all very confused, really. A lot of the early Rufige stuff on Reinforced seems to have come out of jam sessions with Marc Mac, Dego and Goldie (and maybe others) messing around with sounds, pushing things to the limits of technology then, sampling a mentasm, twisting it, resampling it, twisting it some more... i believe that's partly where the term "rufige" originated, to describe the rawness of the nth generation samples.

According to Nine Lives, Terminator was the last thing that Linford worked on with Goldie. He left the studio early with a very early draft of Terminator on the go, and left Mark [presumably Rutherford] & Goldie (and a large amount of E, according to the book) in the studio... and the result of the session without Linford was Terminator as we know it now. Apparently Linford was stunned by the end result.

If you read it again it seems more like it's mark out of 4hero on the session. But it isn't clear.

But it definetly refers to Toby Linford as 'the other half' of rufige kru.

Guest Steve J

Rufige Cru is Goldie + whoever produced with him on that particular track/EP.

For e.g Marcus Rutherford on Terminator, Marc Mac/Dego on Darkrider, or Rob Playford on the track Fury (Shadow)
