Some 2nd gen beats:

Real Roxanne & Hitman Howie T (or was that Tee?) - Bang Zoom! Let's Go Go

Billy Squier - Big Beat with scratches.

Used in Potential Bad Boy - Let Loose [Ganja]

Not really 2nd Gen, but a drumcomputer (does that count?)

Dynamix II - "Just Give The DJ A Break" (Beat with 808)

Used in:

Skin Up - "A Juicy Red Apple (Altern 8 Remix)" [Love]

Skin Up - "Stoned" [Love]

Mantronix - Sing A Song (edited beat)

Used in:

Blame - "Music Takes You" [Moving Shadow]

Sonz Of A Loop Da Loop Era - "Peace & Loveism (Weird Breakism Remix)" [suburban Base]

Salt 'n' Pepa - "Spinderella's Not A Fella" (Beat, Beat With Scratching)

Q-Bass - "Funky Hardcore (DJ Hype Remix)" [suburban Base]

Wreckx-n-Effect - "Rumpshaker" (Beat with trumpet sound)

Bizzi - "Loose (Q-Bass Remix)" [Formation]

I'd put drum machine breaks in as first generation, personally, since that's their original source.

Are these drum machine breaks as well, or sampled breaks with added bits and pieces?

OK, here they are.

Dynamix II is an 808.

Mantronix looks like it's based on a proper breakbeat. Both the chopped up version that comes first as the "clean" version at the end have been used.

Salt 'n' Pepa is more a sample than a beat... (more scratching than actual beats)

Rump Shaker... not 100% sure what was used in Bizzi. My CD-Maxi doesn't have a really clean loop, there's always the start of Darkest Light, vocals bits or that trumpet over it. And I haven't got a copy of Bizzi's tune here to compare what can be heard in the sampled loop. Anyway, what I mean with "beat with trumpet sound" is the loop that starts at 5 seconds and again at 14,5 seconds (so not that other trumpet sound in it...). Oh, and Rump Shaker layers various beats... don't know what exactly was sampled...

Dynamix II: do the two examples sample the bassline too? If they do, I think we should pop that into the Sample Sources forum, rather than the breaks one.

You're right about Spinderella - pop that one in the Sample Sources I think.

Rump Shaker: the actual break is Manzel ? Midnight Theme, the trumpets and vocal comes from elsewhere though. Need to listen to a copy of Bizzi to see what it uses before deciding if it sampled Rump Shaker or Midnight Theme really. Anyone got a clip?

Good spot with the Mantronix one, definitely used in Music Takes You, alongside Run's House.

For Dynamix II the 808-bass and all is used. But as the 'bass' is from the 808, I still consider it part of the beat... (or did I classify it as beat+bassline in my list?!?)

Above I talked about 2 loops in the sample that have the break and that sound at the end (as all others don't have that!). That's also used in Bizzi (so not just the beat). Can get a clip next time I'm at my mate's place.

A beat and a bassline to me is a groove, not a breakbeat. The 808 in that clip is definitely playing out a melody, and not just a rhythm.

If you could get a clip of the Bizzi tune next time you're at your friend's house, that'd be great :)

Complaint.

I would like to complain about the listing of the breaks. Its not accessable to have it listed in the way that you do. Can we not just have the topic headers just like for the 'Sample Sources' forum - artist name, track name?

Those 'break' names are mostly arbitary - anyone can call a break anything, and they often have. When I look up a break I wanna know who done it, and what the song was called - those are the most important bits of all.

So I will now add one of my own, if it was already 'there' then don't blame me - I counldn't see it

The break names are not that arbitrary - 99% of the time they're based on the name of the song they've come from. When the break is known by several names, I've included those. There's an A-Z list of all the breaks on this forum as a sticky, so you can Ctrl+F to find it by name -- they're all linked up.

I take your point about adding artist name too, though. Will get to work later in the week :)

Oh, and please use the template for additions, makes everything much easier to manage.

part of the beat of ganjaman by red alert n mike slammer is made out the beat at the start of come together but processed well to disguise it, shame their tunes allways sound 8 bit or like they were recorded at low bitrate because they were good tunes.also the core by fbd prodect sampled ganjaman as the beat has the same 8bit quality as ganjaman. what edge of darkness used for the beat i dont know but how slammin vinyl made their tunes i would not be suprised if they made it that way

i will accept im wrong on this one but i still think johnny l made the hurt u so (rmx)beat out of logical progression, as his beat sounds 8bit (like slammin vinyl tracks) and it is clean on logical progression or at least the copy on that producer album on cd is. also nhs (disco mix)by doc scott has 2 bars from the same beat in his beat but his does not sound 8bit quality so ether he sampled where bukem got his from or used his beat. if i am wrong (probably) please tell me as it has bugged me for years

The Bombscare break is already listed in the forum as "The Jam" - by Graham Grand Station..

However I would maintain that it has actually been taken from the second generation source that is Biz Markie's "Pickin' Boogers"

Anyone like to comment?

I think it's probably not sampled direct from The Jam, yes. I will find the Biz Markee track and check :)

thanks for the heads up.

I'll be merging this thread with the Additions and Corrections thread to avoid the forum getting cluttered.
