The_Manipulator
hi cant find this one out. where are the bells at the start of 31 seconds sample from It's just a synth with arpeggio on. They could have easily made it themselves...
haste
It was a sample off a Future Music cover CD...all the samples used in that tune come from the same CD!
Ornette
It was likely to be a sample rather than arpeggio because you can hear the riff triggered off high-speed double time in the 1997 remix. But its a simple simple arpeggio pattern, isn't it. Is this the same for the "Dark Stranger" melody too?

eXtreme
they are definitely on the Cd, i have it somewhere (sample un-processed sounding), i think only the bassline was sourced from elsewhere, all the rest came from the CD. eXtreme
just having a quick listen, ill do a clip. wooo, this is a haven for samples - too many! 3rd party used this loads in 1993.

eXtreme
What did they sample off there? not vocals/speech, mainly little noises or synths etc.. a lot on these 2 : http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/3rd_party/3rd5http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/3rd_party/3rd7 also noticed: Invisible man - the beginningDoc Scott - Prototyped - 31mistermen - a drum & a bass + loads more little bits here & there
haste
Well...why don't we make up a topic about this CD...it would count as a valid sample source, I guess. If we can pin down original sample sources for any of the bits on there (like the vocal s from 31 seconds) then we can list them separately with their correct source and make a note that they were actually sampled off this CD Sound OK? The_Manipulator
Hmm... I'm not really in favour of adding sample CD's as a source. One reason that we end up with listing a few sample CD's (just add a list of sample CD's where you can sample Amen or Apache from...). A lot of times the FM CD's contained "previews" of commercial sample CD's, so why not state them as the source... I think for the most part we left out stuff where it's obvious that something was sampled from a source different from the original. Hell, I think at least 95% of the dance music industry doesn't care where a sample comes from and certainly doesn't sample it from the original! I'm willing to make an exception for something like the bells from VotS, but I don't think we should just add the rest of the samples on the FM CD's... haste
Yeah, I agree. But I was just thinking that listing this one might be interesting seeing as it was so widely used...that doesn't seem to be something that happened a lot afterwards although I may be wrong. We won't be listing any CDs that people used to sample breaks
Guest Guest
Is this the same for the "Dark Stranger" melody too? No that one comes from a Kraftwerk tune, I think it's "Electric Cafe" I'm sure I heard some 80s record on radio 2 with a sound that was like the valey of the shadows sound but it probably wasn't exactly the same. Although obviously based around the (third) "Think" breakbeat, its been maniputated in such away to be distinctly different to the basic sample. It's pitch-shifted down a bit, and it gets re-triggered on the 3rd beat like so: P.S. There's a couple of links here... original:???????????[1]-[2]-[3]-[4]-[5]-[6]-[7]-[8]31 seconds:??????1..........................3..........3............. (lasts a bit longer than a bar) But what's also different is that the first re-trigger on the 3rd beat somehow hits softer than the second, not only that there seems to be some extra manipulation between the 4th & 5th beats. It's also mono - may be looping just the one channel of the stereo soundstage. Clearly this is an oft used (2nd gen) break, especially with '94 jungle. Its popularity certainly came about after the appearance of "Valley Of The Shadows" in early 1993; however I'm certain that it has been used in d'n'b/hardcore much earlier before, albeit a slightly different form... ...a Nookie tune maybe? i'm thinking "Give A Little Love"... Ok - look - there is one place I know for sure you can definitely see evidence of this 'slightly different form' so-called "31 Seconds" beat. Take a look at the track: ?????Unit 1- Arden (Creative Wax, 1993/1994) If you listen to that you will see exactly what I mean - the break has this funny drop-off in volume in the middle of it?!! So can someone pls post a good 44.1khz, 16-bit stereo 'rip' of this Future Music CD breakbeat? It's quite important...
blah
haven't checked but is that beat the same as in the remix ? , if so I have that on cd and at the end of the remix it is clean for quite a while so can post that (have been using that source for years). sorry I mean the 96 remix, would LOVE to have the 93 remix on cd. Ornette
Blah, thanks for the offer. But I really want to see about this 'original' source. Can someone please upload a clip pls??? Extreme?Manipulator?
theorie
yeah... I'd like to try and make something of a '93 darkcore tune with the break. That'd be fun
Ornette
Here's my copy of the break... (grabbed from Tru Playa'z web site back in 1996) http://www.tradezone.ltd.uk/tarzanstuff/THINK.WAV As you can see it lasts longer than a single bar. Extreme / Manipulator - can you dig out your Future Music CD and post the break from there? If as mentioned most magazine cover CD's have samples that are mostly little sub-sets of commercial full price sample CD's then the chance is this break comes from somewhere else. I'd like to find out where, exactly, because if my hunch is true then this 'original source' would be a true candidate for the 'Breaks' forum. Again, this break did become very widely used and should be documented, even if it is only a second-generation re-edit of the original Lyn Collins - Think break. Serum
I've got the break on a few sample CDs. I know E-Lab Xstatic Goldmine 3 has it, and probably some others. If you listen the break in the intro is a similar break pitched down even more. On the Future Music CD with this break there are a few different edits, like the one from valley of the shadows with the quieter second snare, and the one used in "the calling" which has the kick, then shakers all the way until there's a snare at the last beat, there are loads of variations and I think it would be taken from a sample CD. You can hear on tunes like "Something New" he has taken nearly all the sounds from one of the Zero G Datafile Sets so I reckon loads are from CDs. Maybe I'll find more as I find more vintage CDs. Ahh thats just what I mean there Serum. This second edit must be the one I was describing here: ...however I'm certain that it has been used in d'n'b/hardcore much earlier before, albeit a slightly different form......one place I know for sure you can definitely see evidence of this 'slightly different form'... Unit 1- Arden (Creative Wax, 1993/1994)...funny drop-off in volume in the middle of it... Not sure what track you talking about when you say "The Calling" - which one is that??? But I think we on the same wavelength What I would really like is some 44.1khz 16bit stereo rips of this break and all its associated edits. Reckon they may all have been used at some stage, and should all be entered into 'Breaks' forum. Ideally we need the original CD sources for these but guess Future Music CD could be specified as source for now... Oh do any of these 'edits' have names given to them, as most sample CD's seem to?
