is it possible for your collection of vinyl vs dd for the same release?

Right now we can click on the record bag to indicate that we have a given release. I've always liked the 'collection' feature.

However, with a few esoteric exceptions, new releases for dnb are also available as DD. I've been collecting records as always, but every week I also download 5-10 songs for my internet radio show on kunninmindz.

For some of these releases, I do want to get vinyl copies eventually, and the DD is just to tide me over. Because the 'collection' feature currently doesn't distinguish between different formats of the same release, the RDB collection feature doesn't help someone who for whatever reason wants to keep track of both vinyl and digital.

My workaround for now has just been entering when I have something on vinyl only. But when my DD collection gets larger and harder to remember/keep track of, this will start to become a problem.

i think this is what we were talking about before, Tom -- the ability to select what format you have a release in (and also the ability to have a particular part of a release -- eg, disc 1 of a 2 x 12" pack, or one mp3 out of a full release).

what Phokus said.

Let me give an example. I downloaded "Haters" amd "Swerve" by jakes http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/d_style...ordings/dsr018/ the other week, along with "Seven Notes in Black" by High Contrast http://www.rolldabeats.com/release/hospital_records/nhs150/. These were from dnbarena and I did NOT download the basement track remix on the hospital release because I think it's weak.

So now, for these releases I can't click that I have it in my collection, because for either of these releases it states that it is a 12". Like most new DNB on major labels, this is available as a DD, but rdb only lists the 12" format. Generallly speaking rdb tends to list releases when they are DD only, but if they also exist on vinyl it just lists the release in its vinyl format. If I was to click that I have either of these as in my 'collection', the listing would imply that I have -

- both the dstyles songs on wax ( I don't - it's only a digital download for now)

- both the hospital tracks ( I don't - it's only a digital download, and I only bought one of the two tracks)

So for now my workaround has been to click on a release when I have it on vinyl, and don't track my collection of digital downloads. But, as I get more dd, I won't be able to remember everything and it would be nice if my collection could reflect what I actually have on wax, what tracks I actually have as dd only. That way, for the tracks that I really like and which I only have as DD, I could know to look out for those releases as a vinyl purchase one day.

also I should underscore that part of the point is that stores make it possible to DD track-by-track, instead of comprehensive releases. This is different from getting a single 12" secondhand when it's supposed to be a doublepack. This is part of how the track was purchaseable from stores/distrubutors. If you have a vinyl, its inevitable that you also own whatever is on the flip of the b-side. That's not the case anymore with digital downloads.

It would be possible to do something like this, I'm sure, but that's going to be quite a bit of work and some rather large database changes to get to the stage where you can add individual tracks as DDs.

I guess it'll go on the list for consideration but I wouldn't expect to see it any time soon

Yeah I figured it would be hard to do, even if it makes logical sense to do it given the changing 'digital' times. Oh well, rdb still kicks ass for identifying releases. Haste, does this also mean you don't want me to post corrections when something listed as vinyl also exists as DD? With new releases that's almost everything these days. So basically RDB now lists the various vinyl releases, and the the other digital formats only when vinyl copies don't exist (e.g. the Goldie "Sine Tempus" album)

I can think of ways in which we could do this at track level, so please do keep on identifying what's available as DD even if we don't use the info right now.

I think we'll continue using the current method for now but I'll certainly have a think about how this might be done.

  • 5 months later...

Digital downloads are only added if exclusively digital, or if the release differs from the vinyl outing (eg, extra tracks).

i've noticed couple of these 12" & dd releases which are exactly the same. these dd releases should be deleted, right?
