Success-N-Effect - Roll It Up turns out to be another of those big 'amen derivative' breaks used so extensively in the early days of hardcore! The track is a remix of an earlier song "Roll It Up My Nigga", a weak sounding 'miami bass' type tune with a vague anti-drugs message asking dealers to 'roll up' their act. I've not heard the original remix yet but it seems that this, the "Bass Kickin Beats" mix would be the edited up version of the drum machine & amen of the main track - following in the vein of quite a popular tradition around then of including an additional 'bonus beats' version intended no doubt as a mixing tool for dj's or whatever - Omar Santana being one name that springs to mind as a proponent of this, credited on a number of 'bonus beat' tracks as editor! I came across a clue on this a while back whilst looking through some old versions of Touch magazine. In Oct 1992 edition Nicky Blackmarket reviews The Horn Track and mentions it using: "the Success N' Effect break and the electro 'Egyptian Lover' sample". I had never heard of Success N Effect before, and although I was able to find some details on Discogs it wasn't until Frankie Bones posted his comment on the Freeze/Roll It Up 12" that I worked out what it was. (Worth reading for some background history on this - check it out!) You can tell its the Success N Effect break 'cause its got that 'thick' sound to it. The Nookie remix however is quite interesting as it uses that as well as a clean amen in different sections. Seems a few of the tunes i've listed here 'using' the break are actually taking from the Frankie Bones - Janet's Revenge source, which has a slightly trashier sound with extra whistle sounds and other noises on top...
